Announcement! This will be the last week for winterizing!

There are a certain percentage of my clients who like to live dangerously and they are the ones who wait until Thanksgiving and into December before they call us back for their annual winterizing. They have ignored our mailings since September, our repeated phone calls, and emails reminding them that this service is available and not an option.

Service Agreement.jpgThis week marks the beginning of the fall season. It is a great time with the start of a new school year, the football season, baseball playoffs, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. It is also the end of summer, heat, humidity, and time to begin to think about winterizing your sprinkler system.

shutterstock_29995423-et.JPGThis past summer was tough one for landscapes especially for lawns. The heavy rains in June, high heat and humidity in July and August put tremendous stress on lawns. Grass is a cool weather plant and when the temperature outside rises and it becomes real hot it naturally wants to go dormant. Of course, we want our lawns to be green and lush throughout the summer so we fertilize and water hoping that it stays green and looking great.

thatchf1.jpgCore aeration is one of the best turf practices you can apply to maintaining a healthy lawn. Core aeration is a process of mechanically removing plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn. Lawns need air, water, and nutrients and core aeration opens up the soil to receive these vital elements.

fertigation page.jpg Fertigation is the combination of fertilizer injected into the irrigation water supply and distributed by the irrigation system. The irrigation system provides the method of distribution for fertilizer and thereby provides immediate benefit to the turf and plants covered by the sprinkler system. This is not a new method as it has been used for many decades by the agriculture and horticulture industry.

Front yard landscapeMany of my clients discuss with me about the high cost of maintaining their landscapes. This includes designing, installing, and maintenance. I always ask what their objective was and did the work meet with their expectation. If they used a reputable landscape company then typically the answer is 'yes' however they still converse about the cost to maintain their home and property and that is one area that may not have been planned for or planned well. If you are designing a project and you want to keep your maintenance cost to a minimum then consider the following:

Flooded Tree.jpgMay showers last month created for some very wet soggy soil at many homes and properties that Rain Rich manages. I measured 4" of rain for just one week at my home. Today is another soaker. This is much more water than most plants can use and a lot more than most soils can absorb. If you are watering automatically during these wet spells than please turn your clock to 'off'. If you have a rain sensor (an absolute must) and it works than that is great, however, when the weather is nice and the rain sensor dries out and your system comes back on - is it really necessary to water?
