Ice storms often coat many surfaces, such as trees

With the possibility of a big snow storm arriving this week  the time to prepare is now. Large snow storms can wreak havoc for days following the big blast. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:

1. Make sure you are prepared to remove snow from your driveway, walkways, and even your roof!

2. Have snow shovels and ice melt ready. Too many times the snow shovels are old and about to break. Make sure you have plenty of ice melt handy. Go see Manny and staff at Greenlawn Hardware www.greenlawnhardware.com. They have everything you need and they are very knowledgeable and friendly.

3. If you need ice melt, I have a safe non toxic environmentally friendly supply that is $24.95 + tax for a 50 lb bag.

4. Use bird seed on walks and driveways to help out our feather friend and to keep you from slipping and falling. Bird seed won't damage your home when you walk inside.

5. Start you snow blower- today! And have it run for 5 minutes. Check the controls, grease the joints, and check all the cotter pins, connections, have plenty of fuel handy in the proper container. Wax the chute to prevent snow from sticking.

6. Have a backup plan in case you can't shovel or use your snow blower. Hire a local snow removal company if there is too much snow. Call us for phone #'s of friendly companies. Don't wait! The snow can freeze and turn to ice then you will never be able to remove.

7. Stock up on non perishable food items.

8. Make sure your home is clearly marked for emergency vehicles to see.

9. Check on your neighbors especially the elderly.

10. Have batteries for flashlights and radios.

11. Have matches, candles, firewood, and blankets.

12. Have an alternative to heat food. BBQ?

13. Do not drive your car! If you have to then please be prepared in case you get stuck. Flashlight, shovel, blankets, flares, jumper cables, ice scraper, etc.

The good news is that the storm should blow in and out within 24 hours. Many of you are probably in good shape due to the blizzard we had in December. The really good news is that spring is just 38 days away. Call me at 631-423-2211 in case you have any questions or need help.
